InSite is proud to announce that Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center is Maryland’s first ENERGY STAR® certified hospital with a 2022 certification! This property received an impressive ENERGY STAR® rating of 92 out of 100.
The White Oak Medical Center (WOMC) campus is state of the art, with a LEED certified design that is focused on improving patient experience through a connection to nature as well as reducing carbon emissions and minimizing the campus’s energy usage intensity. The medical campus consists of a 576,000-square-foot acute-care hospital, medical office building, and parking. The design of the campus features healing gardens, maximized window views of the environment, and nature-based planning such as a lakeside walking trail.
In addition to its sustainable design, the campus utilizes numerous optimization strategies to reduce its carbon footprint that aided the hospital in achieving its ENERGY STAR® certification. The hospital focused heavily at the beginning of the year on Economizer Optimization across its air handlers and rooftop units. This ensures the campus can gain energy savings by leveraging readily available, free cooling during milder weather and can prevent energy penalties during more extreme weather. Another Energy Conservation Measure (ECM) of focus included seasonal temperature resets on the campus. Setpoints on air handling units were increased in milder conditions to reduce lift on compressors at the plant. To add to its efficient energy practices, the campus owns and operates a combined heat and power, or CHP. This allows WOMC to consume gas to produce electricity and heat for the campus; the electricity is used directly at the campus, while the heat is repurposed in other plant operations such as hot water pre-heating.
The 2022 ENERGY STAR ® certification is a testament to the hard work of the facilities team at WOMC, as they continuously serve the medical campus and strive towards further efficiency goals.
